sweet dreams beautiful soul i know how you love to be alone i'll be with you when, in the morning light, you open your shining eyes
2.
he says that he wants pretty things in his life what am i? these are the times we live in this is the age, you got to follow the rage i know, i know the story well you take your love for granted looking for just a little bit more if you'd watered what you'd planted didn't you know it would surely grow? you'd have your cake and eat it too sweetened breath on body clay smoothing the pain away supermarket trolley race having a bit of space drawing straws to see who'll drive watching our friends arrive knowing with no need to say staying in bed all day and if these aren't pretty things i don't understand i simply throw up my hands in this land of plenty does everything great have a throwaway date? no way, i don't believe it's so no way, i won't i don't believe it's so
3.
she praises me she gives to me asleep beside me she's feeding me she gives to me says too much good, much good about me so much about me i can't believe am i so good? so clean, so pure? as beautiful as she makes believe? i can't believe all she tells me i do believe all she tells me she praises me she gives to me asleep beside me she's feeding me she praises me
4.
Funny Shadow 02:52
all you want is for her to say the words all you want is for her to say them now you want her to tell you fast, you want her to tell you slow and she's lighting another cigarette and she's flicking to see what's on TV if she doesn't glance your way, you might as well be six feet down what a funny shadow you have when you look behind you now it's gone and it's just you and her eating fish and drinking sea if you love something set it free that's what everybody likes to say but what are you meant to do, while waiting for her to come around? all you want is for her to say the words all you want is for her to say them now you want her to tell you fast, you want her to tell you slow 'cos oh it's getting hard remembering what you used to know
5.
i saw the funniest thing the other day a man walking upside down, the other way and i laughed so hard i didn't know it was the end of the world and i had to stay and serve out back with the other girls how's that, how's that for a distraction? i held the tiniest universe in my arms spellbound, amazed but i cried so hard i couldn't tell this was the Genesis and you might well ask what any of that has to do with this how's that, how's that for a distraction?
6.
picking me up and down spinning me round and round lighting me up, every time i am blue i can hear you calling, calling my name and i can feel you falling again into my arms i’ve got you singing in my soul i’ve got you singing in my soul taking away all my pain bringing the sun shining through the rain taking me high to blue skies i can hear you calling, calling my name and i can feel you falling again into my arms i’ve got you singing in my soul i’ve got you singing in my soul swinging me to and fro feeling the ebb and the flow waking me up with your sunshine smile i can hear you calling, calling my name i can feel you falling again into my arms i’ve got you singing in my soul i’ve got you singing in my soul
7.
get your boat and drag it to the water get your boat and drag it to the water get your boat and drag it to the water ready to search for the pulse of the sea take your time, remember what you taught me take your time, remember what you taught me take your time, remember what you taught me you already know it, you're peaceful and free but i'm angry and lonely this is all too much for me the ocean's so deep and i'm such a little girl please don't make me, pay heed to me i'll sit on the beach and read 'cos if it's not my choice it's no choice at all get your boat... the ocean upsets me one moment it's happy then suddenly so angry then suddenly suddenly suddenly suddenly i live in fear of its hot and cold currents it fills me up and empties me in the wink of a tide get your boat....

Dixon St 04:59
it's only when you've grown up you're allowed to drive a car it's not until you go someplace you realise what you are mm mm mm it's not until you've left that you remember you belong it's only when you've been away you notice what has gone mm mm mm walk down dixon st in the lunchtime crowd every day i wonder who these people are walk down dixon st going into town every time i wonder if i've met them all before it's only when you're not here there's any need to know it's only after living here you feel you can go mm mm mm walk down dixon st in the lunchtime crowd every day i wonder who these people are walk down dixon st just off cuba mall now and then I think I should know these people
9.
Spin Silver 05:15
i smile slowly and touch your hand 'cos when i walk this world with you it makes me think it could be true that we can live comfortably with ghosts and mirrors and drink thirstily of freedom in decomposable cups and take heart by the heart that comes of giving and then make peace after giving a piece of our mind this is happy, your skin and mine to search the edges of the sea to be the one you make of me yes we can live... i am convinced i am alive this love, a river running deep it claims my heart and soul to keep and tells me we can live... this kind of love is what you give and i break down to think of it you spin silver over me you spin silver
10.
over time people think they learn to know you but did you know? no-one ever truly knows you oh did you know? and often times it's your closest friends who go the furthest wrong the ones who think they know you get you furthest wrong bonds that tie can break you bonds that tie can break you i'll not let you any closer to me the closer you get the less you see the more you assume the less you read that's my philosophy you talk like i'm not in the room and i know you probably never meant no harm but it hurts and still i feel alone all these years i've been alone bonds that tie can break you bonds that tie can break you when water flows it won't return and you can't undo what you already learnt we men, we men are only water and clay driving rain may wash us away as we gain in years we all grow weaker and this i know you better get yourself in order cos when trouble comes you'll be on your own when trouble takes us every man will stand alone
11.
rise above the water you are free of influence from the weight of the world lost to all the world what good are you now? what good are you now? nothing there to guide you nothing there to hold you belong in the water forced up against the flow this is positive tension burden on which you rely
12.
All I Can Do 04:19
the weather in wellington is so changeable the wind comes and goes last night - so still - as we walked home you have to be awake to all that's happening the changes as we breathe breathing the changes the wind turns again and the sky clears she smiles and gives me a kiss or clouds pour she has something to tell me i need to be awake which way is she turning? all I can do is tell the truth all I can do is be true all I can do
13.
Shasta Daisy 04:23
i am not a creature of habit but i like my mornings of solitude the first thing that i do is praise this ocean and this garden i wash this celestial body in the light of day and my mind is still and fear just falls away like curtains and i am thankful i see you in all your shapes and colours, juice-encrusted smiles and frowns of misery your hearts are on your sleeves you pull tears of wonder from my eyes and the last thing that i do is praise this ocean and this garden

Original songs recorded live to mini-disc in Stephen's Bay, Kaiteriteri and Mt Victoria, Wellington, back in the year 2000.

Tessa Rain is a gifted songwriter and performer, a member of the Fly My Pretties collective and creator of a beautiful subsequent solo album called Dirt Poems from 2010.

The songs co-written with Eliot Pryor started as poems he sent to Age from overseas.
